Michael O’Hare (@hairmetalchef) is Chef Patron of The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds, which was awarded a Michelin star in October 2015. Not setting out to become a chef, Michael studied Aeronautical Engineering at Kingston University where he trained to be a pilot, before falling in love with food. Prior to opening his own venture, Michael spent time working at some of the world’s best restaurants, including Michelin starred chef John Burton Race at L’Ortolan and at Noma in Copenhagen. “My influences in food come from everywhere,” said Michael. “I am really interested in Spain and Asia, and presentation and ideas can come from music, art, architecture.” The creative chef is also influenced by Teesside, with his highly-praised fish dish on the Great British Menu – a version of fish and chips, which he named Emancipation – inspired by the landscape near Redcar which he described as his “industrial home town”
